LA VEINE: VINTAGE SHOPPING GUIDE

August 28, 2016

VINTAGE SHOPPING GUIDE

When I wrote this post on ethical shopping, buying vintage was mentioned as an obvious and creative alternative to the High Street brands. If twenty or thirty years ago people didn't buy second hand clothing unless they were poor, now the vintage market is in constant expansion and has conquered it's own place in the fashion industry. Wearing vintage is now considered cool, and the best part is that by doing it you're helping the environment and, of course developing a strong sense of personal style. I'm far from being a vintage expert, but there are a few things I always do or think about when I'm looking for vintage gems that I find important for you to read, especially if you're only now starting to explore the second hand market.

GREAT QUALITY IS NOT CHEAP. This is one of the biggest myths about vintage clothing: it's probably not as cheap as you'd like. There are a few stores where you can buy anything for a few euros, but these stores are usually full of pieces that are too old and too damaged. I recommend that you explore all the shops you know, check out the prices and see for yourself what is and what is not worth buying. I'm pretty sure that you'll find great stuff at low prices, and a few pieces that are worth the splurge.

BUT YOU CAN ALWAYS ASK YOUR GRANDMA. The older women in your family probably own a few vintage pieces they don't wear anymore and that would be a great way to get you used to wearing second hand. You can start out by seeing what you like and what you don't, what kind of models look good on you, etc. It can be quite intimidating to start wearing vintage in public all of a sudden (especially if your style is more discreet), so maybe your grandma's vintage scarf is a good way to start.

WHAT'S WORTH LOOKING FOR. Things you can easily find with amazing quality: belts, bags, ties, sunglasses, denim and jackets in general. But be careful when it comes to shoes. They can seriously damage your feet because they were moulded to someone else's. Also, don't buy anything that needs to be fixed somehow unless it's something you're really in love with, because chances are you'll never get it done afterwards.

KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE PRIZE. If you're on a mission to find the perfect dress, don't spend a lot of time checking out other stuff because otherwise you'll get easily lost. Take your time to try lots of different dresses on; unfortunately, it's easy to find a gorgeous dress that is not your size, so pay attention! Remember, what the manequins are wearing is on sale as well and if you like something, don't be afraid to ask someone to take it off the show window for you.

ATTENTION TO DETAILS. Zippers, tags (the brand's and the other one about the materials), buttons, stains, rips, moth holes, etc. Every imperfection. Don't believe in anyone that tells you the stain comes out easily; if that were the case, the dress would be clean. Also, don't buy anything that looks like it's gonna disintegrate at any moment! Look for pieces with strong fabrics and seams. If you think the price is oddly low for the piece, you can always ask if there's any problem with it. Again, don't forget to try it on! And if you have a friend that's really picky with clothes, take them with you because they might see something you didn't.

PRICES ARE NEGOTIABLE. Vintage shops are private businesses most of the time, so there's always a chance to convince the owner to make you a discount. I used to go to this shop where I bought so much stuff that the lady made me half the price at the end, and I didn't have to beg. Without being annoying, make an offer and you might get lucky.

LOVES AT FIRST SIGHT DON'T SHOW UP A SECOND TIME. I learnt this the hard way: my biggest vintage regret is a pair of Dolce & Gabbana sunglasses that I left behind for a few hours because I was not sure I loved them enough. They were 10 euros. If you fall in love with something that has no flaws and that you can afford, take it home with you as soon as you can because it might not be there when you come back for it. In fact, it probably won't. And it's not like you can order it from a website afterwards, because it was the only one. Don't be impulsive, but also don't leave the store thinking about coming back for something.

If you're good at hunting things down (which I'm not haha) I think it's great to search through charity shops/car boots as you can actually end up finding some gems that are cheap, but it takes a lot more time!

Also, don't buy anything that needs to be fixed somehow unless it's something you're really in love with, because chances are you'll never get it done afterwards.

Boy oh Boy is that so true . . . for years I just purchased and said oh ill fix it and NEVER DID it ended up going rt back to the thrift store when I was tired of it in my closet and donated it.
