LA VEINE: HOW TO FIND THE PERFECT GIFT FOR EVERYONE

November 26, 2016

HOW TO FIND THE PERFECT GIFT FOR EVERYONE

More than watching people unwrap their presents, I love the journey of looking for the perfect gift. As soon as I have an idea of what it will be, I start thinking about money limitations, time limitations and all the resources I have at my disposal to find (or make!) something special and creative. The final destination is a happy (and hopefully surprised) gif-receiver. Reactions are, of course, extremely important - they are the final confirmation that I did a good job-, but this post it not about people loving their gifts. This post is for someone who might be lacking inspiration, and probably stressing about all the gifts they have to buy for the holidays. I'm not even the best gift-giver I know, but I've been learning a lot lately and I think I can manage giving you a few tips on how to find the perfect present for anyone, on any occasion. I wont talk about specific products, if that's what you're looking for, but I'll be walking you through the process of making the perfect choice.
Vogue Russia April 2016

FIRST OF ALL, WHO IS THE PERSON YOU'RE GIVING THE GIFT TO?
More important than their role in your life, think about who they are as individuals. Are they more emotional or rational? Do they love music? Do they hate sports? Write down five things they're interested in.

If this person is emotional, you might want to give them something that reminds them of you, of a moment you had with them, or maybe something to collect future moments. Emotional people usually like handmade gifts, photo collages, small things like bracelets or a new pendant for the necklace they always wear. They will love if you give them something related to what they talked about a long time ago, which shows that you care and always listen to what they have to say. If they're artistic, you can always give them a scrapbook, a "wreck this journal" or new paint brushes. Either way, make sure you find something thoughtful and don't forget the cute card.

If this person is more rational, pay attention to their hobbies and find something cool and unpredictable. For example, if this person loves music, you can give them a book about the style/artist they love, instead of the album they probably already have. If this person loves mysteries, why not going with them on a riddle adventure? Just find something, a theme, and that's your start.
Vogue Russia April 2016
DO YOUR RESEARCH.
Ok, you have found your subject! Now you can start doing your research.

Check this person's social media. Pinterest boards are wonderful for present ideas and instagram selfies will tell you if this friend is fan of a bright lip, which might lead you directly to your purchase. If you're close to them, observe their bedroom. Just by looking at my mom's jewelry box I can already tell she loves earrings. Are they usually long, or short? Are they colorful? The right gift will fit in that majority.

Read reviews if you're not an expert. So your uncle really loves whisky, but you know nothing about alcohol. Maybe you should read a few articles, learn how to appreciate a good scotch and then buy the perfect bottle. Not only he will certainly be happy, but you will also learn something new.

Also think about what you can bring to the table. Maybe you're a talented painter or maybe you work at a beauty store and have access to discounts (I don't know if this really happens, probably not). Whatever it is that you can do, I'm sure it will make your gift even more special: a lovely handwritten note, a poem, a cute illustration or a Sephora gift card.
Vogue Russia April 2016
DON'T GIVE PEOPLE WHAT THEY NEED.
Unless we're talking about someone who really, desperately needs something only you can give them, don't give people what they need. I know I have to buy a few pairs of stockings as soon as possible, but I don't want you to give them to me on my birthday. The present that makes me happy is that red lipstick I knew I wanted for so long, but never bothered to buy. Or something as useless as a notebook I will never write on because it's too beautiful. Gifts are a luxury.

If you're shaking your head in disagreement, at least be creative. So your sister has been telling you she really needs a new pajama. Instead of buying something boring, give her a nice silky pink set. When your dad says he needs new shirts, find something in that color he usually doesn't wear but that looks great on him.
Vogue Russia April 2016
LAST MINUTE TIPS & TRICKS
Maybe you're short on money, maybe you forgot to buy your presents and now it's Christmas Eve. Hopefully these tips will help.

Buy things in packs. You can find a pack of 3 or 5 nail polishes in almost any beauty store. If you buy a package, you make 3 or 5 happy little cousins. This works with dvd's, socks, chocolate boxes, jewelry, etc.

Get creative with food. If you're good in the kitchen you can bake some cookies, put them in little jars with a cute card and you have yourself an army of gifts for the whole family. This works with already made cookies too, but at least make sure they're not from the supermarket. You can also make other desserts, or mix a variety of bonbons.

In fact, creativity is key. If you're a good drawer, you can offer yourself to draw people's portraits on Christmas Eve and give them away in the end. If you like charades, you can create a treasure hunt for the family with trivia questions that, when answered correctly, will lead to little treats or candy.

How are your gift shopping sprees going? What do you want for Christmas?

  76. Your tips are on point! Creativity is the key. I think it's the thought and love behind gifting something that is the most important. It's true that you have different kind of people. I am an emotional person and I cherish each gift I receive no matter the value, for the simple reason that it touches me to see that someone took time to offer me something.
