LA VEINE: WHEN MY BLEACHED HAIR GOT RUINED

November 20, 2016

WHEN MY BLEACHED HAIR GOT RUINED

I had a happy, one year relationship with my platinum bleached hair. It went from slightly bleached to completely platinum white in a day, work that was done by a professional (you can read about the process here). It may be hard to believe, but during that year my hair was actually in very good conditions. It couldn't obviously be compared to virgin, healthy, "living" hair - it was dead after all -, but it was still thick and strong and I loved the color. Then a few weeks ago, everything went downhill.

WEDNESDAY There is zero interest in complaining about what happened to my hair, but I thought it would be an interesting experience to share with people who might be going through the same thing (even though I hope you're not). A professional, who was not the hairdresser I usually work with, thought that my hair could go lighter and bleached an already bleached part of it (most of it, except for the roots)... for a pretty long time. Long story short, yes, I still have my hair, but I probably have half the hair I had before (I can tell when I put it in a ponytail), the rest is still falling after washing and to make matters worse I have a few locks with probably 4 or 5cm of length all over my head, which corresponds to my roots untouched by the bleach. Most of these short locks are framing my face (because that hair is naturally thinner, so it breaks more easily) and now I can't even tie it to hide the small hairs on top, because I have this huge amount of 4cm hairs around my face. So, yep. It's a huge mess. Did I mentioned it's half black, half blue?
This was obviously an accident. Was it the hairdresser's fault? Obviously. The best quality a hairdresser can have is the self awareness to realize when something he's supposed to do is out of his area of expertise, and inform the client that's the case. This hairdresser really believed he could do it and felt extremely bad when we saw the results; I'm not mad at him, I just wish things had turned out differently.
I knew, even before the accident when I still had my gorgeous platinum hair, that our relationship would see the end someday. Bleaching hair is nerve racking for both me and my hairdresser and she had told me that the day she saw my hair getting weaker would be the day to stop. That was how I imagined it: one day she would say "You know what? Nah" and that would be it. I would miss it, but there would be nothing to complain about and no collateral damage.
But now this happened and I had to say goodbye earlier. Which is fine, it's easier now that I don't even like this blueish color, but I am really worried about the health of the hair. Obviously I can't do much about the dead part, so I'm invested in making the new ones grow the healthier and stronger I can by taking hair supplements and using the best products I find in the market.

SATURDAY Today I went to see my hairdresser. Even though it was never her responsibility (the other hairdresser wanted to fix it, but I felt more comfortable with someone I know since I was a little girl), she spent all day taking care of my damaged, black & blue hair. She started off by cleaning the black and blue colors the best she could, and in the end my hair was platinum again with brown roots. After that, she toned it so the color transition would look more soft and natural, which resulted in a brown-rooted-caramel-platinum hair. I know it would be easier to picture it with, well, pictures of me, but if you're curious enough you can see the different hairstyles on my instagram. After that she also cut it (since I'm letting it grow now, the less damaged hair I have the better) and that was it. It looks (and feels) so much better now, it's almost surreal. I really do have the best hairdresser someone could ever ask for. If you're from the north of Portugal, you should check her out. Since I learned a few things from my experience, here's my advice and the products my hairdresser recommends for the best possible recovery.

IF YOUR HAIR IS DAMAGED...

TRY NOT TO WASH IT AS OFTEN. If something similar happened to your hair, you really shouldn't be washing it like crazy. It was something I had to fight against because I wanted to get rid of the blue so bad, but water (specially when warm) really dries your hair out and we don't want that. Get some dry shampoo and use it for as long as you can. When it's time to wash, do it very gently with good quality products. My hairdresser recommends Kérastase Resistance Bain Thérapiste Shampoo and Matrix Oil Wonders Micro-Oil Shampoo.

HYDRATION IS KEY. Your bleached hair will never be the same again, but you can always pretend. To make it stronger, softer and shinier (and also for the new growing hairs), hydration is the most important thing. When possible, sleep with a hair mask and go all the way to the roots with the conditioner when washing. Don't be scared: if your hair is this damaged, it won't get oily due to the conditioner. My hairdresser recommends Kérastase Résistance Masque Thérapiste and Matrix Oil Wonders Oil Conditioner for super intense hydration. A great serum to apply everyday is the Matrix Oil Wonders Indian Amla.

NO HEAT. There was no drastic change for me with this one because I never blow dry my hair or style it with heat. If you usually do, consider stopping or at least doing it less often. To brush your hair after washing, wait for it to dry because it will fall and break less. To escape from the hot tools, my hairdresser recommends a few styling products that help whenever I want to hide those wild hairs on top or give it a little more body: L'Oréal Infinium hairspray, L'Oréal Tecni Art Fix Design, L'Oréal Tecni Art Fix Anti-frizz, L'Oréal French Girl Hair Messy Cliché and L'Oréal French Girl French Froissé.

BE PATIENT. Take care of your hair but most importantly, give it time. It will take a lot of time to grow and be healthy again. If you're thinking about coming back to bleaching, wait for it to grow completely and talk to a professional. Don't rush things, pretty hair is not worth the risk of losing it completely (because that can happen). Also, don't be too hard on yourself if you don't like what you see in the mirror; thinking about a million things that would be worse helped me when I had to deal with mine. Don't let an accident shake your self confidence. At the end of the day, hair grows back again.

HIDRATAÇÃO É A PRIORIDADE.

No final do dia, o cabelo volta a crescer.

  7. Eu nunca pintei o cabelo.

  82. OMG, I feel so sorry about your hair accident. I was pushing my hair too much, and I had to stop. Right now I have to take a lot of care, so thanks for your advices. Hope your hair is fixed soon. See you on your next post.

  83. Sigo o teu lindo cabelo no instagram faz tempo.

  99. When I was younger I had terrible experiences with hairdressers. Now I only trust one for colorimh my hair. Anyway you absolutely must try Olaplex n. 3, it's a miracle treatment for bleached hair. Feel free to check my review on my blog. Thank you for sharing your experience! 105.
kesulitan masalah keuangan, Awal mula saya mengamalkan Pesugihan Tanpa
hanya berkonsultasi jarak jauh. Alhamdulillah, hasilnya sangat baik, jika ingin
