LA VEINE: PACKING FOR PARIS IN WINTER (WITH JUST A CARRY-ON BAG)

January 14, 2017

PACKING FOR PARIS IN WINTER (WITH JUST A CARRY-ON BAG)

One of the first things I do when I know I'll be visiting a new place in the near future is to read posts about what I should be packing. Depending on the location, culture and time of the year we're facing, our packing decisions may change, and that's why I wrote this very specific post about packing for Paris, in winter, with just a carry-on. I'll be there for five days next week, and even though I struggled with wether should I write this before or after the trip, I thought that this way I could not only read your advice, but also let you know what went wrong after my trip. On y va!

On y va!

HOW'S THE WEATHER IN PARIS? From what I've been reading, winter in Paris is not that different from winter in Portugal, especially if you're from the north like I am. I'm ready for the cold and the rain, but other than that I probably won't have to deal with temperatures way under the 0ºC or snow. Either way, I'm taking the warmest clothes I have at my disposal.

LOCAL INSPIRATION. I don't have to be planning a trip to Paris in order to start looking for parisian fashion inspiration, but it's nice to do it with a purpose. If you're thinking about visiting Paris soon and want to get a glimpse of the typical parisian style before you arrive look for Jane Birkin, Françoise Hardy or Caroline de Maigret.

BEFORE PACKING

CHOOSE THE PALETTE. Before I start thinking about specific pieces to carry with me, I choose an outfit palette limited to three, four colors maximum. It's always safe to play with neutrals and that's what I'll be doing: my main choices are brown, white and black. If you want to play with colors, you can always add colorful little accessories that won't take up too much space.

SELECT THE MAIN PIECE. For me, it's the coat or jacket I'll be wearing everyday. Mine is a vintage brown menswear coat with a faux fur collar, and it's the warmest coat I own. My outfits will be decided according to what goes well with it.

The following selection includes what I'll be wearing to the airport. I choose all my pieces first, and then pick the heaviest ones to wear on the first day in order to reduce my carry-on's weight.

ANTES DE FAZER AS MALAS

ESCOLHER A PALETE.

SELECIONAR A PEÇA PRINCIPAL.

WHAT I'M PACKING
COATS & JACKETS. Besides the warm coat I mentioned before (this one from Acne Studios is a great option, you can find one similar here), I'm taking a classic blazer as well. Even though it's not warm enough to be worn by itself, it's good to have that piece that makes your outfit look automatically put together for a dinner out. This one is from Mango.

CASACOS.
SHIRTS & SWEATERS. A cotton t-shirt (I can wear it under the sweaters or with the blazer), two tank tops (they don't take up any space and I'm going to wear the first one as a layer and the second one to bed), and finally three sweaters of different materials, colors and models. You can find the first three pieces basically anywhere, but if you're interested in these specific sweaters the first one is from Mango, the white turtleneck is from H&M and the last sweater is from H&M as well.

T-SHIRTS E CAMISOLAS.
BOTTOMS. I know my choices are pretty boring, but jeans go with everything and will definitely keep me warm. I'm also taking a pair of thick leggings with me to wear to bed and probably to the airport if I want extra comfort. The denim mom jeans are from Topshop, the black skinny jeans are from H&M and these gray leggings are from KOHL'S.

SHOES & ACCESSORIES. I'm still thinking about the shoes I'm taking, but when it comes to this subject I already know that they have to be flat, leather (or made of another water repelling material) and black like these boots from Acne. I'll be taking my leather gloves as well (these are from Mark and Graham), a pair of cat-eye sunglasses (Miu Miu), a warm scarf and a bag that's big enough to carry my two cameras.

UNDERWEAR. There is not much to say about this, but I thought it was worth mentioning that I am also taking a pair of warm tights with me, in case I want to wear them under my jeans. A sports bra is also one of my favorite things to wear under my shirts, since the fabric seems to isolate the body's warmth.

BEAUTY. I try to be as minimalistic as I can when it comes to packing make-up. I'm taking a red lipstick with me, a nude lipstick, lip balm, eyeliner, mascara, concealer and an eyebrow pencil. For skincare I'm packing my daily moisturizer with SPF 15, mini perfume, make-up removing wipes and a daily cleansing product.

BELEZA.
A final Jane Birkin for extra inspiration
I'd love to read your opinions on my selection and your best packing tips!

  14. You're right to do some research before packaging. In different countries we might need different things. Winter in Paris is probably not very different from that in Portugal, but I think it might rain a bit more? Anyway, you're right to pack comfy clothes. They are easier to style. If you want to dress up, you can always do so with details but if you wear some dressy or formal clothing item, you probably won't get the chance to wear it and dressing it down might prove more difficult.

I think comfy shoes are so important when travelling because usually when we explore some new town we walk a lot!!!

  26. Great advice! I actually have a few posts on my blog talking about this stuff as well. It's excellent to pick one main piece you'll wear day in and day out. For me it's usually either a coat or shoes. I also agree with keeping makeup minimal. I especially like to because as an American, I feel like it makes me blend in more. Americans pack on the makeup too much and Europeans have a simple look. Really enjoyed reading this! Also, Portugal is one of my most favorite countries! So jealous you live there. :)

  30. The best tip I can give you is: pack neutral clothes. Whenever I take too many clothes, I end up wearing only a few that are, in short, neutral and easy to match. Oh and don't forget to enjoy your trip!

  31. I know packing can be a challenge. I went to Paris in the fall and it was colder then I expected. I felt under dressed some of the days. I brought a lot of black being a typical New Yorker, I am on a black ban though no more black clothes or shoes for the next year, lets see if I can pull it off.

Oh and when using your suitcase, it has wheels still lift it up and carry up and down the stairs. I made the mistake of letting me drop stair by stair as I was leaving the house and bamo off went one of the wheels. It was awful, had to get to JFK like this. Luckily I could buy a replacement at the air port lol.
