LA VEINE: FASHION CONFIDENTIAL: WHY DO WE LOVE FASHION?

January 26, 2017

FASHION CONFIDENTIAL: WHY DO WE LOVE FASHION?

As most of my readers already know, I am a soon to be a fashion design graduate. I've been dreaming of this since I can remember and, although there've been many challenges along the way, somehow, I am slowly getting there. Since there are a lot of people, with different ages and from different backgrounds, who dream of working in the fashion industry, I thought it would be interesting to share my experiences up until now, and those yet to come. I don't know everything, but I do know a few things.
This series entitled "Fashion Confidential" is going to follow my professional evolution. This means that right now, as a student, I will talk about fashion school, professors and degrees. Then, when I start interning, I will share with you my experiences in the work place, and so on. I hope it's interesting but most of all, I hope it's helpful. You're free to ask me whatever you want, but right now it's me asking you: what makes fashion so appealing?

Harper's Bazaar UK November 2016
FASHION AS I WAS GROWING UP
Just like most girly girls, I grew up surrounded by dolls and dresses. I probably didn't love fashion more than any other girl - after all, I didn't even understand what the word "fashion" meant -, but I was passionate about drawing and illustrating and it was very natural for me to start designing clothes from a very young age. At the time, I believe, fashion was appealing for two reasons: first of all, because it was related to things I considered beautiful. And then, because for some reason I enjoyed the challenge of designing different clothes that people could wear one day. A few years later, the word "fashion" started being associated with the huge dream I had of becoming a successful designer.

WHY I FIND FASHION APPEALING NOW
Eventually I got to study art, history, sociology and realized that more than the (very important) aesthetic part that inspires me so much, like the beautiful pictures and runway shows, what I love the most about fashion is that it can be used as an important tool when my intensive observer/people-reader self is analyzing a period in history, a group of people from somewhere or a new classmate. After all, the way we dress tells a lot of stories: the one about who made the clothes (and where they lived, how many children they had, which painters they met), the one about us (how we perceive ourselves, how we want to be perceived, which colors we like, how we're feeling today) and the ones about our culture, the place where we live, our parents restrictions when we were growing up, our religion. I'm not a people's person when it comes to socializing, but I am definitely a people's person when it comes to subjects I find fascinating.

A MODA ENQUANTO EU CRESCIA

SELF EXPRESSION & CONNECTION
As I said above, the way we dress tells a lot about us and I think this is probably the main reason most people like fashion so much. Just like other objects, we use clothes to connect with other people and they acquire their own meanings over time. The symbology of a pair of shoes my grandmother gave me doesn't necessarily show to other people, since they can only look at the shoes and realize that they are red and pointy. But I know how special they are and wear them when I'm feeling specially feminine. This connection people have with pieces of fabric or accessories is incredibly fascinating. When it comes to expression, it's also important to mention how relevant fashion has been when it comes to communicate new political and cultural values, or the need for a change.

FASHION AS A CREATIVE OUTLET
Working in the fashion industry requires, depending on the job, different amounts of creativity. As a fashion design student, I have the opportunity of creating wearable art and the challenges that appear thourghout the process are huge. It's quite a task to be able to reach the optimum point, in which something is as beautiful as it is wearable. Giving art a practical purpose is, I imagine, extremely appealing to creatives and fashion is also a creative outlet to everybody else: mixing clothes, patterns and textures is something we do carefully everyday.

A MODA ENQUANTO MEIO CRIATIVO
Harper's Bazaar UK November 2016
GLAMOUR AND FAME
It's impossible to forget the superficial appeal of the industry: in theory, working in fashion promises money and endless glamorous parties and friends. It's also considered an easy work to do because fashion is, well, fun. Obviously things don't really work that way, but I'll leave that to another post.

FITTING IN & STANDING OUT
For those who don't want to work in the industry but still love fashion, the appeal is probably in the power clothes give us to fit in or stand out. What we wear can get us a job, make everybody look at us when we enter the room or almost create an invisibility shield. Through fashion, you can deceive people into thinking that you have more money than you actually do, for example.  Also it can be a jump start for motivation, staring at that Hermés bag can be somebody's reason to finally start their own business, or get a promotion in the old job.

THE DREAM
Fashion is inspiring. No matter if you're buying a dress, reading an article or looking at an amazing editorial, there is something about the unknown and the mystery of a world where you don't belong that makes you carry on. The human being is curious by nature, and the feeling of not really knowing something we find interesting makes us feel like there is still so much to do in life.

GLAMOUR E FAMA

O SONHO
A moda é inspiradora.

  11. I think fashion is quite appealing for the fact that in reality we all have to wear clothes daily! Thus it's part of our everyday life. And as much as some people don't think about it at all besides the fact that they have to do it---others of us, find it creative and challenging!!

  16. I think you've pointed out most of the main reasons fashion is so alluring. It's always been a love of mine, because I feel like the right outfit can transform a person. It's self expression and creativity at its finest. It's also escapism in a way. I know that I can sometimes get carried away thinking about a dreamy outfit, where I'd wear it, what I'd do, and it leads to excessive daydreaming. I'm sure there are others who do the same thing.

I'm excited about this series, and I can't wait to read more!

As you noticed, fashion can mean many different things. It can be observed from different angles.
It is about artistry, but it is also a business. It is about looks, but it is also about the message. Fashion fascinates me because it is so complex and diverse...from runaway fashion to street fashion, inspiration is everywhere....there are many different aspects to it.

  91. I'm sure you will have fun in the industry, as much as I do :)

  92. Slightly similar as you, I used to adore fashion since I was little but I never thought that I could fall in love with fashion even more today. Well, fashion really tells our identity, our character, also stories just like the one you said before. I hope we all could be good influencers in fashion industry :)
