LA VEINE: A GUIDE TO SHOPPING IN PARIS

A GUIDE TO SHOPPING IN PARIS

Bonjour! I'm back from my trip to Paris, and ready to tell you all about the amazing places I found and the experiences I had. As some of you may already know, it was my first time in the city of lights and it was truly an amazing adventure (even though it was absolutely freezing). But we'll get there in a minute. Since I wanted to share everything in detail, I divided this topic in two or three posts; the first one will be about shopping. From vintage to luxury, I was lucky enough to have a taste of everything and return with the best stores and shopping streets for you. So let's get into this, and in the end let me know what you would like to read about next: museums? Food? Something else?

Bonjour!
When we think about parisian luxury, the first thing that comes to mind is the iconic 31 in Rue Cambon, where Coco Chanel opened her shop in 1910. Since this store is almost a museum to me, I had to go there and see it with my own eyes. To be honest, my plans for this store consisted of window shopping and leaving - my thirteen year old self was literally chased by a security guard at the Chanel store in Milan once, and since then I've been quite reluctant in entering one again just to browse -, but my boyfriend was like "Well, we're here, we came all this way for you to see this store, so we better come in and really see it". He was obviously right, so I agreed.

The store seemed huge. We probably didn't see most of it since we got caught up in the beauty counter, but there are beautiful things everywhere and people drinking glasses of what I imagine would be champagne. The store is divided in areas: one for shoes, one for clothes and bags everywhere. The store in Milan didn't have any prices showing, but this one has. All the ladies working there are super elegant and the client treatment is incredibly nice, probably because since they have beauty products on sale, they don't look at you and immediately decide that you're not a client.

I bought a little souvenir for myself in the beauty counter, not because I couldn't buy it here in Portugal but because I thought I deserved a little treat from the first ever Chanel store. The shop assistant took me to another colleague, who gave me a certificate saying that myself, Madame Marta, had really bought my souvenir at the 31 in Rue Cambon. In case someone would doubt.

A loja parece enorme.

If you're ever in Paris and want to buy yourself some luxury pieces, Rue St Honoré is probably the place to go: Dior, YSL, Gucci, Hermès and a bunch of other iconic names can be found there. These streets are full of classy people smoking their cigarettes, both parisians and wealthy tourists. It probably helped that I was there during Paris Haute Couture Week as well.

The Galeries Lafayette are also worth mentioning when it comes to shopping huge brands. I personally hate this department store formula: I feel like it's unorganized and the close environment gives me headaches. But it seems like a lot of people enjoy it, and it is indeed the fastest that you can walk from Marc Jacobs to Céline.

I obviously had to do my research on the cool, trendy shops as well. Of what I saw, Paris has two main super cool stores: Colette and Merci. If you're around the high end boutiques, Colette is just a few meters away; Merci is near the Bataclan Theater.

Starting out with Colette, you can definitely find Gucci there. They have an amazing range of cool fashion magazines, photography books and make-up. They also sell the Replica perfumes from Maison Martin Margiela, as well as gadgets, jewelry, decor pieces and clothes from new and upcoming designers. I wish it wasn't so full when I went there, because I had to wait a few minutes before I could take another step. But it just shows how trendy it is right now.

Merci is quite similar when it comes to the products they sell, but the aesthetic is less urban and more clean, organic and conscious. They had great sales when we went there, so it's a good opportunity to buy clothes from new designers. You won't find famous high end brands in here, but they have a wonderful home decor selection. It was very amusing to see them selling black toilet paper from portuguese brand Renova as if it was the crown jewell. Oh!, they also have a cute café filled with books. The food looked pretty good, but if you go there chances are it will be full.

If you're into this kind of stores and products Le Marais, specially the area around the Musée Picasso, is a good place to consider. You can find a lot of new designers stores there and trendy brands like Supreme. There are also a few vintage shops, which takes me to my next and last subject: vintage shopping. I don't have any pictures of the shops I went to because I was too distracted with the clothes, so here it is my list of stores you must visit:

Kiloshop. This one is pretty famous in Paris because you collect what you want and then pay by the kilo. They have a lot of stuff for both men and women, including a huge selection of fur.
Sissi's Corner. Sissi, the owner, is a fabulous french lady who sells a small selection of pieces from brands like YSL, Lacroix and Dior at amazing prices. After telling her I was a fashion design student, she showed me a fabulous Lacroix coat and then I asked her if the clothes used to be hers. She laughed in my face and said with her french accent "Oh no, I buy them and I sell them! What do you think this is, a museum?".
Kiliwatch. This one is divided in two sections: new clothes and vintage. They have a great vintage selection, specially for men, including brands like Burberry and Hugo Boss. The shop assistants are not the nicest, but it's not like you need them when you're looking for the perfect jacket.
Plus que Parfait. The perfect store if you're looking for a high end present for your boyfriend or father. The owner is very friendly and sells Alexander Mcqueen, Marc Jacobs, Givenchy and other brands for great prices.
Tilt Vintage. It's hard to find luxury brands at Tilt Vintage (even though I did saw a fabulous YSL men's coat), but they have a pretty good selection of vintage clothing in general. It was the only shop I found selling sunglasses, and they had beautiful bags in great condition.
Gilda. I found this one by chance and ended up buying a gorgeous bag that looks like a million bucks. The lady was super nice and the shop has a lovely selection of both vintage and new dresses.
Didier Ludot, Odetta and Vintage Paris. Three shops I window shopped at that sell high end luxury. Didier Ludot and Vintage Paris definitely sell Chanel bags.

Didier Ludot, Odetta e Vintage Paris.
It would be a crime not to mention the two iconic book stores we went to: Shakespeare & Company and the Librairie Galignani. Both of them have a huge selection of books of all kinds, but I found Shakespeare & Company more interesting if you're a tourist (they even have a piano you can actually play), and Galignani a favorite when it comes to fashion related books.

  46. I think would be intimidated to go in a Chanel store:)...Now I imagine myself being chased away by the security guard even if I'm not 13. However, it is good to know that the Chanel store in Paris has a beauty section too so they're more open toward potential customers. Let's face it- most of us will never be able to afford the Chanel bag. I don't think I would want one even if I had the money- better to support independent designers...but it is surely an iconic place to visit. I wouldn't mind window shopping there.

  99. Ugh I love this post! I do wish I would have had this guide when we were in Paris a few months ago. We stayed very close to the shops so we just walked aimlessly and window shopped for the most part. I about died when we found Repetto, but Chanel?! I would've really died. Ha!

  100. Woowwww! How goddess looking are all these shops and photos! I'm not so much into luxury brands but I think why not if you're in Paris to at least go and see all these ironic places.

  108. This is truly a shopping heaven . I am so glad u entered the store, and yes, they are super courteous, and they know who is going to buy or not. But after all its the experience that matters.

  113. Great post and great photos!
The Marais is my favorite place to shop and I agree that Shakespeare and company is a great book shop!
Galeries Lafayette is definitely not my favorite place either - the last time I was there a couple of weeks ago I found that the assistants were quite rude!

  117. I loved that article! It reminded me my own trip to Paris. I also visited Chanel store and Gelleries Lafayette! I went to Chanel store myself and it was an exciting experience! The guard there was really friendly and offered me to take a picture of me standing on the iconic stairs. So try to do that too next time. ;) You can see my post about that experience here http://www.smellofjasmine.com/bonjour-mademoiselle/
