LA VEINE: 5 STEPS TO FINDING YOUR PERSONAL STYLE

5 STEPS TO FINDING YOUR PERSONAL STYLE

A few months ago I was buying stuff that I absolutely loved without even thinking about how and where and when I was going to wear it, which eventually led me to a closet full of clothes that were impossible to style together. That was the moment I realized that something had to change: the way I looked at my personal style and the way I shopped had to change. So I thought about what I really wanted and made an effort to start buying with my head and not with my heart (which is a lot harder than it seems, but it's finally starting to show it's results). However, before I even started shopping, I had to make sure I knew what worked for me and what made me feel happy and confident. It's a process that can be incredibly natural to some people and extremely complicated to others; after all, everyone is different.
But if that's the case fear not, because I'm telling you five easy steps to take in order to find your personal style. If somehow you're feeling lost, if you feel like your clothes don't fit your personality or likings anymore, if you never know what to buy or where, then this might be the post for you. I'll be talking about smart shopping in the near future, so make sure you let me know if there are any questions you'd like to see answered next time!

1. Get back to the basics. If you're curious about my next post on smart shopping, this is a step that works for both processes: when in doubt, buy basics. I used to hate spending money on white tees and "normal" jeans; it looked like a complete waste of money to me because they didn't look special or unique. But trust me on this one: buying basic pieces is the best investment you can make. You will wear them SO MUCH, you have no idea! So if you need a t-shirt, just buy a good quality, white t-shirt. If you need jeans, don't think too much about it and find a versatile fit that works for you and feels comfortable. You don't even need to have your personal style figured out for this step, because literally everyone wears basics. I'll be talking about the must-haves every closet needs very soon.

2. Just try it on. Before you start thinking about the styles you admire or the items you like, just go to a store and wear every color and shape that you can find. Even, specially the ones that do not look that appealing at first sight. Make a photographic register if you want, and try to understand what looks good on you, which dresses or pants suit you best. You can even ask your friend or mom's opinion later, and show them the pictures. It's important to know your own body and what makes you feel the most comfortable. And remember, if that blouse is not exactly what you're looking for, chances are there is the perfect version of it somewhere else. That specific item may not be what you want, but the color or cut will still look great on you.

3. Find a style icon. This is the fun part! Just think of someone who always looks flawless. It can be a movie character, a model, someone you actually know... Or you can pick a group of people with specific looks. The easiest way to organize your sources of inspiration is by creating a pinterest board or a file on your computer with the pictures you want. I have A TON of fashion related boards: one with my girl crushes, another one with random cool outfits and then there's the board with the clothes that somehow represent the person I want to be in the future. I know, I'm not weird at all. But you can bet I never find myself uninspired.
5. Find out what you like and stick to it. So you finally bought these gorgeous high heels that make you feel and look amazing. Plus, they're super comfortable. If that's the case, I would say go for it and buy similar shoes in different colors and materials! Wearing to death something that you already know that works is nothing but a smart move, so don't be afraid of looking boring or like you're always wearing the same thing. We are the most creative with clothes when we wear what we love, so I'm sure you'll find ways of mixing it up. If the formula works, repeat!

6. Maybe now it's time for a closet cleanout. There is no better time to take a look at what you own than a season transition! Get three bags or boxes: one for selling, one for keeping and one for charity. DO NOT get a fourth box for "I'll think about you later", because if you do all of your clothes will end up there. With your fresh inspirational pictures in mind and maybe a few new clothes already, think about what still works for you and what doesn't. And don't be sentimental! Unless we're talking about a wedding dress or something of the kind, they really are just clothes.

And these were my five steps for a personal style adventure! Do you have more advice for someone struggling with this?

  6. I've made the 'I'll think about you later' error, and I always wind up returning to those clothes to give them away at a later date. If you don't have an answer during the closet cleanout, there is no 'I'll see you later' - just 'it's time for you to go'. :)

My style is unique, I like wearing things that aren't common without going over the top. Also your suggestion about buying basics is a GREAT suggestion. I have TONS of basics and I can mix and match them with anything. You can never have enough quality basics!

  60. Tips #1 and #2 really resonated with me! The past 2 years, I've also been all about investing in great basics because those are the pieces that end up really standing the test of time. They also make better layering pieces for your overall outfit. I also never jump the gun on what looks good/bad before I try it on cause clothes definitely look so much more different once its on you and how it complements your hair and skintone.

  61. Nosssa, eu tô tipo numa fase dessas.
