LA VEINE: FASHION CONFIDENTIAL - JOBS IN FASHION

March 03, 2017

FASHION CONFIDENTIAL - JOBS IN FASHION

If you already know that you want to work in fashion but design is not your thing, there are a million other jobs you can have that are just as exciting and challenging. For a long time, designers and creatives have been the face of the industry. Sometimes it can be easy to forget how there are so many other people in fashion, doing different things, but in fact there is a career in fashion for almost any degree. Since I want this series to be informative and super complete, I wrote a list with small definitions for some of the jobs in fashion.

FASHION DESIGNER
Not that you need an explanation for this one, but I thought of including it anyway. A fashion designer is someone who creates fashion: the concept, the aesthetic, the clothes. They can also do the sewing work, depending on the dimensions of the brand they work for. We usually think that designers work alone but most of the time, they have a huge team of other designers behind them doing research and sharing ideas. It's important not to forget that there are a lot of fashion designers, doing jobs at different scales. And designing fashion is not just for couture: there are designers for accessories, shoes, patterns, textiles, costumes, lingerie and so on.

STYLIST
I don't think this happens somewhere else, but here in Portugal people are constantly confusing the terms stylist and designer (and usually someone gets pretty mad about it). But they do very different things. While a fashion designer creates the clothes, a stylist uses them as a tool to make a visual story for a photoshoot, or a video. Basically, they put the clothes together with a purpose. Celebrities, for example, are dressed by stylists to the red carpet; magazines have stylists that create outfits for the character they're shooting; runway shows, music videos, brand campaigns, all these projects need a stylist.

STYLIST

PHOTOGRAPHER
We all know what a photographer does, and some talented photographers have become huge names in the fashion industry over time. As a designer, it's important to choose someone with a specific vision to translate what we're trying to say with a new collection. Photographers usually have assistants, so that's a good way to start if you're fresh out of college.

FASHION ILLUSTRATOR
Someone who creates fashion related illustrations but does not design new clothes. Fashion illustrators usually work as freelancers, for magazines or brands, drawing celebrities or outfits from the runway.

FASHION JOURNALIST
Just like any other journalist, a fashion journalist has a specialty. They usually write articles about trends, interview people from the industry and sometimes go to fashion week. Some journalists become fashion critiques, who only write their opinions on collections and fashion shows.

EDITOR
In a magazine, each department has one and then there is the editor in chief. No matter what kind of editor you are, your job is to make sure your department is doing things right and following the vision you have for the magazine. They basically command the ship and advise their team.

EDITOR

PROFESSOR
Just like any other degrees, the ones specialized in fashion need professors as well. They always have some kind of background in fashion, usually fashion design.

PROFESSOR

VISUAL MERCHANDISER
Someone who creates engaging displays in order to get the right client's attention and share a visual message. A visual merchandiser thinks about what the brand wants, who the client is and chooses the clothes and the objects that, when together, will make the client want to get in the store.

VISUAL MERCHANDISER

FASHION MANAGER
There is no such job as a fashion manager, but I had to put it that way so this doesn't get too specific. Just like in any other industry, fashion needs to be managed and for every area there is someone making sure everything goes smoothly. So even though there is not a fashion manager, there are human resources managers, sales managers and so on.

FASHION MARKETING
Just like the previous point, fashion marketing englobes a lot of different jobs. So, what is fashion marketing? Basically, someone who works in the area has the mission of finding out who is the consumer, their tastes, which products the brand is selling, how the sales are going, etc. They have to know everything about the market and then, using that information, they create new and engaging ways of taking the product to the consumer. And to do that, the fashion industry employs event planners, market researchers, publicists and so on. If we think about, a lot of people contribute: a journalist, an editor, a photographer or a stylist are also doing fashion marketing. And we can't forget about the fashion bloggers.

FASHION BLOGGER
Or influencer. This is a very recent job in the fashion industry and I'm sure you don't need me to tell you what it is. Bloggers are nowadays used as impactful promotion tools for fashion brands and, in some cases, become worldwide famous personalities.

ART AND GRAPHIC DESIGNER
The ones who take the pictures and videos and edit them, create fonts, work with the illustrators and take the visual content to the next level.

FASHION BUYER
Someone who usually works for a retail brand and chooses what they will sell next. A fashion buyer, keeping in mind what kind of consumer they have and what is trending at the moment, visits the brand's showrooms and buys what they think will be a success.

COMPRADOR

BOUTIQUE OWNER
Someone who has their own shop. It can be a designer or a smaller scaled version of a fashion buyer.

MODEL
It can be a runway model, an editorial model, fit model, hand model, leg model, plus size, petite... You know the drill.

MODELO

PUBLIC RELATIONS SPECIALIST
They basically help the brand maintain a good public image. For example, if for some reason there's a huge scandal involving the creative director, the public relations specialist will be the one to contact.

FASHION FORECASTER
Someone who is incredibly knowledgeable regarding the fashion industry and can predict which trends will be here for the next years. They work for designers, retailers and other entities that need this kind of information.

THE MANUFACTURING TEAM
We cannot forget that a factory, or even an atelier, need a lot of workers. From the seamstresses to the people at the cutting room, or the manufacturing engineer who controls machines, techniques and employees, there are a lot of people working on the clothing and accessories we buy. Not to mention the handcraft tailors, who are slowly disappearing.

HEAD OF INNOVATION
If you're more into technology or science, this might be the best choice for you. The head of innovation not only creates new textiles and products, but also looks for what could be changed in the old ones. It can be a great job opportunity, now that fashion is leading towards a more conscious path.

I think I covered the most important ones, but keep in mind that for every job I pointed out there are 20000 even more specific positions working behind the curtain. What other jobs do you know in the fashion industry?
