LA VEINE: MY GUIDE TO A CLOSET CLEAR OUT

April 22, 2017

MY GUIDE TO A CLOSET CLEAR OUT

I have to start this out by being brutally honest: I haven't done a closet clear out in probably two years. I got rid of a piece or two, yes, but just because I was running out of space, and the reason why I've been avoiding this task is because I currently own two closets in two different houses (one in Lisbon, where I'm studying, and the other one in my parents' house). But I'll be moving again next Summer, which will be the perfect opportunity to take a look at my entire wardrobe and give a good part of it away.
Luckily I've never had a problem with letting my clothes go when the time was right. Having a tidy closet makes me feel like I've got my life organized and, of course, leaves some space for the new clothes I want to buy. Since I am someone who actually enjoys clearing out a closet packed with clothes and some of you feel the need to do the same around this time of the year, I might have some tips for you that usually make the process easier and less stressful.

Choose a free day. I know you've got better things to do with your free time, but make sure you do your closet clear out on a day when you don't have any appointments or obligations that might take a lot of time. We have to start and finish the clear out on the same day, because otherwise there will be a pile of clothes on the floor for the next few weeks.

Set the mood. Select a playlist to keep you in a good mood and add some rhythm to the task. I wouldn't recommend watching youtube videos or TV because that would be too distracting. Same goes to inviting friends over, even though you could do that later for a clothing swap!

Open your closet and take EVERYTHING out. I would, however, recommend that you do clothes, shoes and accessories separately. Starting out with clothes, break it into four categories: tops, bottoms, coats and dresses. Try things on, see what goes well with what, what doesn't fit, take a real look at your wardrobe.
The first bag. Is for the clothes you've worn during the past three to four months (plus the ones you've worn during Winter). These clothes are in good condition and you still like and wear them constantly. This is really an imaginary bag, since those clothes are not going anywhere.

The second bag. Is for the clothes in great condition that you, for some reason, don't want anymore. You will probably sell them or give them away afterwards.

The third bag. Is for those clothes in bad condition that either have to be disposed or recycled somehow.

The questions. If there are still a few pieces that you're not so sure about, look at each one of them and ask yourself the following questions:
- When was the last time I wore this?
- Why do I still have this in my closet?
- Does this fit me?
- Is this in good condition?
- Would I still buy this today?
- Does this go well with most of my wardrobe?

Assess your needs. After getting rid of the clothes you don't want anymore, take a new look at the areas of your wardrobe in need of new pieces: do you need a new white t-shirt? A pair of jeans? Be realistic and invest in good quality basics that will stand the test of time (and the next closet clear out!). But wait until my post about smart shopping for great tips; it will be here before you know it.

As perguntas.
- Ainda me serve?
- Está em boas condições?
- Comprá-la-ia, hoje?

Definam as vossas necessidades.
And these are my tips for a stress-free closet clear out. When was the last time you had one?

  3. I have recently redecorated my bedroom and now we are moving all the furniture back in I think it is the perfect time to have a wardrobe clear out. I am really bad at throwing stuff out though and always want to keep everything thinking that I might need it one day or because it has a particular memory attached to it. I think I will have to be tougher this time though as I am running out of space! x

Doing a proper closet clear out has been in my list now for... well, I don't really wanna count, but let's just say it's long overdue :) I need to get some summer basics and get rid of several whims that for whatever reason ended up in there. In England we have charity organizations picking up your clothes once every few months, so every time they put one of those massive bags in my letter box I try to get onto this. Not always the case, but hey, a girl can be attached to her (20 pairs of) shoes, can't she?
