LA VEINE: 4 TIPS FOR SHOPPING SMART (AND CONSCIOUSLY)

4 TIPS FOR SHOPPING SMART (AND CONSCIOUSLY)

A few months ago I promised I'd share some tips on how to shop smarter and well, they're finally here! Following the lines of my post about finding your personal style, this one will hopefully help someone who's been feeling quite out of control when it comes to buying clothes and inspire you to really evaluate your options before taking action. Let me know what you think!

1. Recognize the difference between "needing" and "craving". I still don't understand how we, generally speaking, got to the point where we feel like we have to buy absolutely everything, but the truth is that a lot of people get a high from buying something. In some cases, from buying anything, really. It's a lot like being on drugs: we know it's bad for us, but we still do it anyway because somehow it feels good.
Without getting too much into that subject, I believe that the first rule of a smart shopping session is being aware of the things that we do NOT need. It's a lot harder than it sounds, and in some cases it's all about staying away from the stores. If you like window shopping but it's hard for you to control yourself, just stop doing it. And wait until you actually need something, like a pair of jeans, to go and buy them.

2. Only buy what goes well with 80% of your wardrobe. Let's be honest: is there a cupcake themed ceremony happening soon? Because if there's not, you should really ask yourself if there is actually an opportunity to wear  the cupcake patterned dress you fell in love with.
Sometimes we make the mistake of not looking at our clothes as the investment that they are, so look at your wardrobe and try to think about it as, I don't know, a living room that you're slowly putting together. Since furniture pieces are usually expensive, people tend to give a lot of thought into those purchases before they make them. Your clothes work the same way. So even if the cupcake dress is incredibly inexpensive, think about the way it would look in your "living room".
3. Give vintage a go. It's the only way you can buy incredibly cheap clothes consciously, because ethical brands will always be understandably more expensive. Unfortunately there are not a lot of options in Lisbon, but I've been doing my research and there are a lot of vintage online shops you can get cool things from. The cute coat I'm wearing here is from clothtome, an incredible vintage shop with a bunch of great, affordable finds.

4. Choose your shopping partner wisely. Whether this is someone who won't let you get away with buying something unnecessary or that friend who encourages you to "feel spendy", think beforehand about your shopping partner and how that person will affect your mood or the number of bags you'll be carrying in the end. I'm one of those people who is better shopping alone, but even between my friends and family there are people I like to go shopping with, and then there are those I would never even invite for a day at the mall. In this case, if you're trying to shop smarter, think about the scenario that would make it easier.
I was not paid to write this post, however I did receive a product from Clothtome.

Some pictures from clothtome's lookbook.
And these are my four tips for shopping smarter! Do you keep any of these in mind when it's shopping time?

  13. first of all, this vintage look is EVERYTHING!! oh I am all eyes on that corset top. secondly, superb tips. Shopping vintage is a good idea. For No. 1, I have to say it's hard to stay off the stores, really, because looking at pretty things is a need of a woman (even if they are not hers hahaha). What works for me is that I still go to those stores, but when I find something cute, I do not buy it but make it an inspiration to be creative with what I already have back home.

  17. lol I know what you mean about a shopping partner who makes you "feel spendy." The last thing I need is a friend who says "Treat yourself!" every time I pick something up. I'm definitely one of those people who gets a rush from buying lots of cheap, trendy items, but it's something I'd like to improve about myself. I really like your analogy about furniture shopping for a living room - I will remember that next time I'm feeling spendy :)

As for the tips to battle shoppaholism, I am already putting some to practice although I still have a bit of work to do. I liked the idea of thinking of your wardrobe as if it were your living room. You wouldn't buy the first thing that appears before your eyes simply because it's pretty or on sale, ha! Happy week, lovely girl! Xx

  42. These are great tips and I especially agree to number 2. There's this Japanese brand called "Uniqlo" and they sell only basic pieces. Ever since I started shopping to them, I never had a problem on what to wear. All the pieces I bought to them always match something in my wardrobe. I shop to them now more than Topshop or any other high street brands :)
